American Forum is a nonprofit media organization that serves as a national clearinghouse for editorial opinion operating like a syndicated news service, providing commentary on current public policy concerns to print and broadcast media. (Forum materials are both national and state specific.) Media packets, which include an op-ed, a press release, and a public service announcement, are available to the media for their unrestricted use. It works to encourage more citizen debate on important societal issues. The key to the Forum program is its state editorial boards, which operate as "think tanks," identifying story concepts and authors. The Forum currently operates in 12 Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Plans are underway to take this innovative media program to other regions of the country.
