Bridging the worlds of philanthropy, public policy, and community action, Benton seeks to shape the emerging communications environment and to demonstrate the value of communications for solving social problems. Through demonstration projects, media production and publishing, research, conferences, and grantmaking, Benton probes relationships between the public, corporate, and nonprofit sectors to address the critical questions for democracy in the information age. Benton initiates projects in three interdependent areas: defining and promoting public policies that support the public interest services and capacities of new media; helping nonprofit organizations use communications tools and strategies to be information providers and social advocates and creating knowledge centers in the new media that are trusted sources and guides to nonprofit information and action. Be sure to check out the Benton Foundation's Best Practices Kit (http://www.benton.org/Practice/Toolkit).
