In 2000, Direct Marketing Association acquired the National Federation of Nonprofits. As a result of this merger, The DMA's Nonprofit Council ceased to exist and in its place is the newly created DMA Nonprofit Federation. The DMA Nonprofit Federation is a segment of the Direct Marketing Association. It was founded in 1982 as the Nonprofit Mailers Federation to work on postal issues. Since 1982, the DMA Nonprofit Federation and its predecessor organizations have been aggressive and effective advocates for nonprofits in postal, regulatory, legislative, and accountability issues. It has led the way in professional education, networking, and industry advancement. The following is a partial list on which NF has taken leadership, and on which no other organization has played a significant role: Nonprofit Accounting, Uniform Registration, Litigation Coalition, Relations with Regulators, Keeping Nonprofits Informed and Involved, Postal Issues, and Other Activities. By joining the Nonprofit Federation (NF), nonprofit organizations have a means to be active on issues involving state and federal regulators, charity watchdogs, the Postal Service, and standards-setting groups such as the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), and also have a knowledgeable advocate before Congress, and a link to other organizations dealing with related issues.
