What if environmental groups had access to communications experts as talented as those used by corporations? What if each grassroots environmental organization had a media expert working full-time to advocate behind the scenes to raise the profile of critical issues? What if they each had a professional editorial director and graphic designer to help create pamphlets, flyers, posters, and newsletters? What if these groups were connected with each other on the Internet, enabling them to easily exchange information and coordinate action? Suppose all of this expertise was located under one roof, working with one cohesive goal: to aid local and regional environmental groups in communicating their message. This is the vision of Sustain, a new Chicago-based nonprofit group. Sustain is dedicated to promoting the concept of sustainability—not only in the environment, which includes our nation's forests, waterways, and parks, but also within the economic system where we live and work. Throughout the heartland, some of the nation's best organizations are working hard toward an ideal of a sustainable environment and economy. Sustain is putting the pieces together to make sure policy makers and the public hear about this important work.
