America's Nonprofit
Sector: A Primer, 2nd Edition (Handbook)
Lester M. Salamon (The Foundation Center, 1999)
In this new, fully revised, and expanded edition of America's Nonprofit Sector, Lester
Salamon clarifies the basic scope, structure, operation, and
role of the nonprofit sector in the United States. More than
that, he places the nonprofit sector into context in relation
to government and the business sector. He also shows how the
position of the nonprofit sector has changed over time, both
generally and in the major fields in which the sector is active.
The result is a basic introduction not only to the American
nonprofit sector but also to the American social welfare system
more generally. In addition to examining the nonprofit sector
as a whole, Salamon includes separate chapters on the various
“subsectors” of health care; education; social services; arts,
culture and recreation; advocacy, legal service, and international
aid; and religion. For each, he identifies the role of the
nonprofit sector, compares it to the roles played by government
and for-profit firms, and highlights recent trends, drawing
on the most up-to-date data available. A concluding chapter
then looks to the future and draws on Salamon's long experience
in this field to identify the major opportunities and challenges
facing nonprofit organizations in the years ahead. This revised
edition adds a foreword by John W. Gardner, co-founder of
Independent Sector; an entirely new chapter on religious institutions;
a new chapter on future trends; and updated data and analysis
throughout. It includes definitions of various types of tax-exempt
organizations and roles of different types of foundations.
Many charts and tables are included to illustrate various
aspects of the nonprofit world, and it clearly explains how
the nonprofit sector relates to the government. Softcover, 203 pages, $14.95
