Mission Possible
(Center for Public Policy, Union Institute, 1996)
In the firm belief that a healthy nonprofit sector
is critical to the functioning of our society, The Union Institute (TUI)
undertook an in-depth review and analysis of the state of nonprofit infrastructure.
By "infrastructure" we mean the universe of leadership, support,
and technical assistance organizations that are critical to the functioning
of the organizations that comprise the voluntary sector. Through a survey,
a conference, formal and informal discussions, and a thorough literature
review, TUI attempted to develop a clearer picture of this universe and
what needs to be done to strengthen it. The Union Institute's Nonprofit
Infrastructure Project has published its final report, an agenda that
identifies seven basic principles to strengthen the nonprofit sector,
along with associated goals and 200 strategic
activities by which to meet those goals. This report defines nonprofit
sector infrastructure; evaluates the state of the infrastructure; identifies
infrastructure needs of the sector; offers strategies for improving the
nonprofit sector infrastructure; provides examples of existing programs
and organizations that strengthen infrastructure, and includes a database of over 800 infrastructure organizations. Many of the organizations in this category
were drawn from ARDI's Management
and Leadership Resource Guide. Softcover,
270 pages, $25
