Nonprofit Organizations in a Market
Economy: Understanding New Roles, Issues, and Trends
David Hammack and Dennis R. Young, eds. (Jossey-Bass
Publishers, 1993)
This book provides an in-depth look at how market
forces affect nonprofit organizations and suggests strategies for their
survival and prosperity in a market economy. It explores the various ways
in which nonprofits participate in the market economy, reviewing various
theoretical justifications of the sector. It examines the role nonprofit
organizations play in providing services within particular industries;
explores the participation of nonprofits in markets for resources they
require in order to operate, especially labor and capital; and focuses
on the relationship between nonprofit organizations and businesses, revealing
how management practices and principles transfer between these sectors.
Links the nature of nonprofits as economic entities to constitutional
protections of diverse viewpoints in a civil, democratic society. Starting
with the notion of a mixed economy, the 14 chapters discuss the consequences
of market influences on the purposes, functions, and outcomes produced
by nonprofit organizations, as well as the process involved. In their
overview chapter, the editors highlight the themes of the book: cooperation
and competition among nonprofits as part of the organizational ecology
in the United States (Part One), resources with an emphasis on market
factors of labor and capital (Part Two), connections between the business
and nonprofit sectors (Part Three). Since the authors come from a variety
of disciplines and research interests, their approaches range from a historical
essay on the interrelationship between emergent nonprofit organizations
and our corporate state in the first half of the twentieth century, to
technical analyses such as “User-Oriented Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations”
and investment decisions by foundations; the chapters present a reasonable
selection of current issues facing various nonprofits, including profit
making by nonprofit hospitals and business involvement in education. Hardcover,
